Highway Lights
There are times in my life when I just need to get away from it all. The hustle and bustle of day to day life. The grind of working, raising a family, etc. I know that it would be irresponsible to leave for extended periods of time, so instead I go for a drive in my car for a few hours. I hit the road, crank up my favourite music, and just drive. No particular destination in mind. Strangely enough, I enjoy going for these drives the most at night. Something about the glow of the dashboard, the headlights guiding the way on the road ahead, all mixed with great music on the stereo that brings me great peace and relaxation.
This piece is written about that experience. The cycling percussion and piano part is designed to represent the forward motion of the car rolling on the dark roads. The melody moves between the tonic minor and subdominant major creating almost a float feeling. The overall vibe of this piece is inspired by the great indie rock bands of the early 2000’s (Death Cab For Cutie, City and Colour, Nick Cave, etc.)
