The Royal City

When I was approached by my local community concert band to write a piece for them, I knew this was going to be a unique and wonderful opportunity. A chance for me to write some music that pays homage to a city I love and call home; Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Often referred to as “The Royal City”.

One of the things I do often during the summer is bike through and around Guelph. I have a route that is approx. 25 kms and it takes me through most of the city. I am always blown away by how diverse the landscapes are in that small geographic area. I decided to write this piece, taking the listener on a journey throughout the city on a beautiful summer day.

This piece is broken into four sections, each representing an important landmarks that is significant to the history of Guelph;

1. The Basilica - When you visit Guelph for the first time you can’t help but notice the beautiful gothic towers of the Basilica that sits atop the highest point in the city. It can be seen from almost anywhere in town and gives the city a regal and elegant quality.

2. The Speed River/Riverside Park - The Speed River runs through the entire city, and one of the best places to experience it is along the recreation trail that runs through Riverside Park. With its old fashioned carousel, ice cream shop, and playground the park always seems to be a hub of activity with the rolling river in the background.

3. The Arboretum - The University of Guelph is one of Canada’s largest agricultural schools, and features a stunning 400 acre arboretum right on campus. With its gorgeous nature trails and lush gardens it is truly one of the most beautiful places to visit in the city.

4. The McCrae House - History’s greatest Guelphite, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae is one of Canada's most legendary war heroes, best known for his poem “In Flanders Fields”. Born in Guelph, McCrae served in the first World War as a field surgeon. Following his passing his home became a treasured museum that celebrates his life. Of Scottish descent, the local pipe bands regularly perform at this McCrae House throughout the summer months.

This piece will be available for purchase following it’s premiere by the Guelph Concert Band in February 2025.
