As a gift to myself, I recorded a jazz album for my 40th birthday. Many of my friends bought a copy to support me, including my old friend from high school, Sarah Irwin. She is an amazing visual artist living out in Nova Scotia. A few months after she got my CD, she sent me a photo of a stunning painting she had done while listening to my album. She painted it on the back of an old wooden door.

Two summers ago my family visited the east coast of Canada, and while in Peggy’s Cove we stopped by to visit Sarah. We spent a wonderful afternoon at her studio and I got to see this amazing painted door in person and it was a really beautiful moment.

Well, I decided to return the favour, and now I have composed this piece for Sarah based on the door she painted. Artists supporting artists.

This piece is inspired by both Sarah’s incredible painting and by my experiences visiting her on the east coast of Canada. If you ever get the chance, go visit the Maritime Provinces of Canada. They are truly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
