To Change A Life

In December of 2024 my high school band director, Suds Sutherland, passed away. Aside from my own parents, he is probably one of the most influential people in my life. His death made me reflect on the role he played in molding the person I am today. Every young musician has someone in their youth who puts them on their musical path and starts them on a journey that continues throughout their lives. They show just how special and important music can be. These people teach us the fundamentals of music, but more importantly, they give us opportunities to find our own musical voice. They are our harshest critics and our biggest cheerleaders all at once. They show us possibilities. They give us a chance to develop and grow as both musicians and people. In short, they change our lives for the better. This piece is written to honour those mentors. Thank you Suds, for everything.
